Total the axle groups without losing sight of individual limits
Gross combination weight from a scale ticket is the sum of the axle groups you enter: steer + drives + trailer = gross weight. Using the example values above, 11,800 + 33,500 + 34,000 equals 79,300 lb. Against an 80,000 lb planning target, that leaves 700 lb of gross capacity.
Being under a gross target does not mean every axle group is compliant. A truck can be under its overall gross limit and still be heavy on a steer axle, drive tandem, trailer tandem or another regulated group. Equipment ratings, tire ratings, axle ratings, bridge-formula limits, permits and state rules can also be more restrictive than a single gross number.
Use the semi-truck axle calculator to compare axle groups and get adjustment suggestions, and use the Federal Bridge Formula calculator when axle count and spacing are the limiting question.
