Diesel Fuel Weight Calculator

Estimate how much fuel adds to gross vehicle weight.

Why the value is editable

Fuel density varies with temperature and fuel composition, so TowAtlas lets the driver choose the planning value instead of treating one pounds-per-gallon number as universal.

How the math works

Convert diesel gallons to fuel weight

The calculation is simple: fuel weight = gallons × pounds per gallon. With the default planning value of 7.1 lb/gal, 150 gallons estimates to 1,065 lb of diesel.

Fuel is part of the truck's actual operating weight. For commercial weight planning, compare the estimated fuel weight with the steer, drive and trailer groups on a scale ticket rather than looking at fuel by itself. Burning fuel reduces total vehicle weight, but the amount removed from each axle group depends on tank placement and vehicle configuration.

Use the result as a planning number

This calculator does not establish a legal axle or gross limit. Use the limit that applies to the truck, trailer, route and jurisdiction, and use a certified scale when an actual operating weight is needed. For a complete check, use the semi-truck axle calculator or compare the total with the gross-weight calculator.
