Payload is more than passengers and cargo

How payload adds up when towing
Suppose a truck has a 2,100 lb payload rating and is towing a 7,000 lb loaded travel trailer with an estimated 12% tongue weight. That puts about 840 lb of trailer weight on the truck. Add 400 lb of passengers, 150 lb of cargo and 100 lb of hitch hardware, and the truck is carrying about 1,490 lb against its payload rating, leaving about 610 lb before any other payload is added.
The important part is that trailer weight does not stay entirely on the trailer axles. Tongue or pin weight is carried by the tow vehicle and can become the limiting factor even when the trailer is below the truck's advertised maximum tow rating.
Where to find the numbers
Use the payload rating for your exact truck whenever possible. Check the vehicle certification and tire/loading labels, then compare those values with the manufacturer's documentation for the exact configuration. For trailer weight, use a real loaded scale weight when available rather than relying only on brochure dry weight.
Common payload mistakes
Do not forget passengers, tools, coolers, bed cargo, aftermarket accessories or hitch hardware. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitches can be especially important because both the hitch itself and the trailer's pin weight are carried by the truck.

Yes. The portion of trailer weight carried by the hitch is supported by the tow vehicle and consumes available payload.
Should I use the truck's advertised payload or the door-label payload?
Use the rating for your exact vehicle whenever possible. Published maximums may represent a different cab, bed, drivetrain or equipment configuration.
Can I be under tow rating but over payload?
Yes. Payload, axle, hitch and combined-weight limits are separate checks, so a trailer can be below the published tow rating while another limit is already exceeded.
Worked example: conventional trailer payload
Hypothetical numbers only—not verified ratings for any specific truck. Suppose a truck's exact door label lists 2,000 lb payload. A 6,000 lb loaded conventional trailer transfers an estimated 12% (720 lb) to the hitch. With 300 lb of passengers, 150 lb of truck cargo and 75 lb of hitch hardware, estimated payload use is 1,245 lb and the preliminary remaining margin is 755 lb.
