Why the rear axle gains weight
Trailer tongue or fifth-wheel pin weight is carried by the tow vehicle. Conventional hitch geometry can also shift some load away from the front axle and onto the rear axle unless a weight-distribution hitch restores part of that load forward.
Rear axle rating is a separate limit
Compare actual loaded rear axle weight with the truck's rear gross axle weight rating, often shown as rear GAWR on the certification label. Tire and wheel capacities must also support the load carried at that axle.
Use a scale instead of guessing
A CAT Scale ticket provides steer, drive and trailer axle weights. For a conventional trailer, multiple weighings can help show how hitching and weight distribution change front and rear axle loads.
Fifth wheels deserve extra attention
Fifth-wheel pin weight is placed directly in the bed near the rear axle, so rear axle loading can rise quickly. The hitch assembly, passengers and bed cargo add to the same overall payload picture.
Weight distribution changes axle loads
On a conventional trailer, a properly set up weight-distribution hitch can transfer some load from the rear axle toward the front axle and trailer axles. Follow the vehicle and hitch manufacturers' setup instructions rather than chasing a generic percentage.
What to check together
