What tongue-weight percentage means
Tongue-weight percentage is the share of the trailer’s loaded weight carried at the coupler. A 7,000 lb loaded trailer with 12% tongue weight places about 840 lb at the hitch before considering how a weight-distribution system transfers load between axles.
The calculation
Estimated tongue weight = loaded trailer weight × tongue-weight percentage. The percentage is useful for planning, but it is not a substitute for weighing a real loaded trailer because cargo location can move the center of gravity.
Why dry hitch weight can mislead
Published dry hitch weight is measured before normal trip cargo, water, batteries, propane and dealer-installed equipment are added. Items stored forward or rearward of the trailer axles can materially change the loaded tongue percentage.
Use a planning range, then measure
For conventional travel trailers, owners commonly plan around a range rather than one exact percentage. Use the trailer manufacturer’s guidance and your hitch requirements, then confirm the actual setup with a scale or appropriate tongue-weight measurement.
Tongue weight and truck payload
The hitch load transferred to the tow vehicle uses available payload along with people, cargo and hitch hardware. That is why TowAtlas pairs tongue-weight planning with a payload check instead of treating trailer weight alone as the answer.
When cargo placement changes the result
Adding heavy cargo far forward generally raises tongue weight; moving heavy cargo rearward can reduce it. Avoid using cargo movement simply to chase a percentage without respecting the trailer manufacturer’s loading instructions and axle/tire ratings.
Common questions
Is 10% tongue weight always enough?
No single percentage is correct for every trailer. Use the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact trailer and verify the real loaded combination.
Does a weight-distribution hitch reduce tongue weight?
A weight-distribution hitch redistributes some load among the tow vehicle and trailer axles. It does not make the actual hitch load disappear or increase the truck’s ratings.
