Planning tool, not certification. Use ratings and limits for the exact vehicle, trailer, tires, hitch and route. TowAtlas compares numbers you enter; it cannot determine every safety or legal requirement.

The four numbers on the ticket

A typical tractor-trailer scale ticket reports steer axle, drive axle group, trailer axle group and gross weight. Those four numbers help identify whether the problem is total weight or distribution between axle groups.

Common U.S. reference values

For planning, TowAtlas can display common references such as 34,000 lb for a tandem axle group and 80,000 lb gross. These are not universal legal limits for every truck or route. Axle spacing, tire and component ratings, state rules, permits and other conditions can change what applies.

Steer axle is not simply 12,000 everywhere

Many drivers use 12,000 lb as a convenient planning target, but the actual allowable steer load can depend on tire capacity, axle rating and jurisdictional rules. TowAtlas therefore treats the steer target as editable.

Gross versus distribution

If gross weight exceeds the applicable limit, moving tandems or the fifth wheel does not remove total weight. If gross is acceptable but one group is heavy and another has room, an adjustment may redistribute part of the load.

Use saved equipment targets

A saved tractor or trailer can store the targets that apply to the equipment you are operating. That is more useful than assuming one generic number is correct for every combination.

Reweigh after adjustments

A slide estimator predicts a transfer; the scale confirms it. After changing tandems, fifth-wheel position or load distribution, reweigh before relying on the result.

Common questions

Is 80,000 lb always the legal gross limit?

No. It is a common U.S. reference for many Interstate configurations, but permits, axle spacing, route rules and jurisdiction can change what applies.

Can sliding tandems reduce gross weight?

No. Sliding changes how weight is distributed between axle groups; it does not remove total vehicle weight.
