What a weight-distribution hitch changes
When a trailer is coupled, tongue load behind the rear axle can remove load from the front axle and add load to the rear. A weight-distribution hitch applies leverage that transfers part of that effect back toward the front axle and trailer axles.
Front axle restoration
A useful scale-based comparison is truck-only front axle weight versus hitched front axle weight with the bars engaged. The difference shows how much front-axle load has been restored compared with the unhitched baseline.
The three useful scale states
For a detailed check, record the tow vehicle alone, the combination hitched with weight distribution disengaged, and the combination hitched with weight distribution engaged. Keep passengers, cargo and fuel conditions as consistent as practical between weighments.
Why more tension is not automatically better
The goal is not to force the front axle to an arbitrary number. Follow the tow-vehicle and hitch manufacturers’ setup instructions. Too much or too little distribution can produce an undesirable setup even if one scale number looks better.
What the calculator can show

Recheck after loading changes
Fresh water, cargo, passengers and trailer storage changes can alter axle loads. If the way the rig is loaded changes substantially, reweigh and confirm the setup again.

Does a WDH increase payload capacity?
No. It redistributes load; it does not raise GVWR, payload, axle, tire or hitch ratings.
Do I need three CAT Scale tickets?
