Planning tool, not certification. Use ratings and limits for the exact vehicle, trailer, tires, hitch and route. TowAtlas compares numbers you enter; it cannot determine every safety or legal requirement.

Start with actual trailer axle load

Tire capacity should be compared with the weight actually carried by the trailer tires, not simply the trailer GVWR divided by the number of tires. Tongue or pin weight is carried by the tow vehicle, so a scale ticket gives a better picture of the load on the trailer axles.

Per-tire math

A basic check is trailer axle load divided by the number of load-carrying tires. Compare that required load with the tire’s rated capacity at the specified inflation pressure.

Why exact equality is a poor target

Loads are rarely distributed perfectly side to side, and pressure, temperature, wear and loading conditions matter. Selecting a tire that merely equals the average calculated load leaves little room for real-world imbalance.

Check wheels and axles too

A higher-capacity tire does not raise the ratings of the axle, wheel, hub, suspension or trailer. The lowest applicable component rating remains important.

Inflation and speed matter

Use the tire manufacturer’s inflation and service guidance. Load capacity is tied to proper pressure and the tire’s intended service conditions; do not assume the sidewall maximum is a universal operating recommendation.

When to weigh

Weigh the trailer loaded the way it actually travels. If possible, individual wheel-position weights provide more detail than an axle-group total, but axle weights are still much better than guessing from dry specifications.

Common questions

Can I divide trailer GVWR by four tires?

That can be a rough screening check, but actual axle load and component ratings provide a better basis because part of the trailer weight is carried by the hitch.

Does installing higher load-range tires increase trailer GVWR?

No. Tire capacity alone does not change the manufacturer’s GVWR or the ratings of the axle, wheel, hub or suspension.
