Start with tare weight
Tare is the empty or operating weight of the tractor and trailer before the freight is added. For useful planning, the tare should reflect realistic fuel, equipment and driver conditions rather than an unrealistically empty tractor.
Basic payload estimate
Estimated cargo capacity = entered gross target − tractor/trailer tare. That tells you how much total freight could fit by gross weight alone.
Axle groups can become the real limit
A load may fit under the gross target but still place too much weight on drives, trailer tandems, steer tires or other components. Cargo position and trailer geometry therefore matter along with total payload.
Fuel changes available cargo
More fuel increases tractor tare and reduces gross payload room pound for pound. When loads routinely approach the target, use a realistic departure fuel quantity in the tare estimate.
Trailer type changes the answer
Reefer units, liftgates, toolboxes, auxiliary equipment and different trailer constructions change empty weight and how freight can be positioned. Save the actual trailer profile instead of relying on a generic tare.
Confirm the loaded distribution
Use payload math before loading, then use axle weights after loading. If an axle group is heavy, repositioning freight or adjusting movable equipment may help only if gross and the other constraints allow it.
Common questions
Is semi payload just 80,000 minus empty weight?
That is a common first estimate when 80,000 lb is the applicable gross target, but actual allowable payload can be lower because of axle, bridge, equipment, route or permit constraints.
Does adding fuel reduce cargo capacity?
Yes. Additional fuel adds to tractor and gross weight, reducing the remaining gross-weight margin by approximately the fuel weight added.
