Dry weight is not trip weight

Dry or unloaded weight is a starting point. It may not represent dealer-installed options, batteries, propane, water or the cargo you add for a trip.

Water adds up fast

Fresh water weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon. A 40-gallon tank can add more than 330 pounds when full.

Build a realistic estimate

Start with the trailer’s actual delivered weight when known, then add water, propane, batteries and trip cargo. Compare the estimate with trailer GVWR and other applicable component ratings.

Use the estimate downstream

The loaded trailer estimate is more useful than dry weight when estimating tongue weight, pin weight, truck payload and combined weight.

Replace estimates with measurements

After the trailer is loaded the way you actually travel, a scale ticket is the better reference.
